I was born in Ohio, grew up in Michigan, went to undergrad in Chicago, got my grad degree in Denver, married an Englishman, and moved to the mountains where I now live in Aspen, Colorado. I guess you could say I've always had itchy feet, so when my daughter, Skinny Jeans, was born I didn't stop traveling. Instead, my husband Peter and I showed her the world. I know firsthand how much more planning and packing it takes to travel with baby/toddler/preschooler/kid in tow. Gone are the days of throwing a bikini and board shorts in a bag and calling it good for a week (here's looking at you Spring Break '99). Nowadays, the contents of my suitcase could clothe and care for a small army. But all that work of packing and repacking and unpacking is just a small price to pay for the memories made as a family that travels. When the last pair of jeans is washed, folded and stacked and the sand has been vacuumed away or the jet lag has passed and the souvenirs tucked in a box underneath a bed, when there's nothing left that indicates you've been anywhere at all, there will always be this subtle shift. A space where a memory was made and you and those you love all got to take a bite out of it at the same time, each tasting something new and unique but still shared. There will be spills. There will be stains. There may even be emergency trips to the bathroom.
